Apologies offer a deeply profound capacity to repair and enhance relationships, as well as build genuine human connection. And yet the study and celebration of these – almost magical words- “I’m Sorry”, have yet to gain a mainstream academic focus around their significance in the cultural, professional, familial and other systems in which clients and practitioners reside. In this provocative webinar, clinical social worker Deborah Levinson examines what contemporary research reveals about the elements of effective vs ineffective apologies, the role of apologies in healthy relationships among families, coworkers, as well as broader social and political context. Participants will also enjoy a fascinating discussion around the cultural vs. practical truths and misconceptions surrounding apologies, defining sincerity, barriers, and the impact of belief systems on both apology and forgiveness.
Deborah S. Levinson, LCSW is a practicing psychotherapist, trained at Johns Hopkins University, and has published research on how people mourn and create a new chapters in their lives following major loss. Mrs. Levinson has presented in a variety of venues across the United States, including Jewish Family Services Santa Barbara, CA, New York Clinical Social Work Society, Greater Washington Clinical Social Work Society, Psychiatric Institute, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York, Johns Hopkins, and U.S. Secret Service Employee Assistance.
