This dynamic class with Deborah Levinson, LCSW, explores the modern landscape of later life, moving beyond traditional retirement paradigms to analyze the expanded choices and evolving opportunities available to today’s older adults. We will delve into the psychological and neuroscientific foundations of aging, evaluating how resilience and brain science findings, particularly on plasticity and cognitive potential, impact decision making and overall well-being. We will also review Erickson’s key theories of adult development, as well as integrate the later stages introduced by Dr. Gene Cohen. This framework offers a compelling lens through which participants can understand the immense potential for continued growth, creativity, and self-actualization in the latter years of life.

 

Deborah S. Levinson, LCSW is a practicing psychotherapist, trained at Johns Hopkins University, and has published research on how people mourn and create a new chapters in their lives following major loss. Mrs. Levinson has presented in a variety of venues across the United States, including Jewish Family Services Santa Barbara, CA, New York Clinical Social Work Society, Greater Washington Clinical Social Work Society, Psychiatric Institute, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York, Johns Hopkins, and U.S. Secret Service Employee Assistance. Mrs. Levinson has also served as an adjunct lecturer at Santa Barbara City College.
