We invite you to join an eye-opening dialogue, gaining a deeper understanding of the intersection of race and the criminal justice system with Dr. Crystal McLeod. Participants will study the direct impact of the criminal justice system on the mental health of black Americans, including community impact and financial limitations as a result of their involvement within this system. Dr. McLeod will also discuss social norms and labeling theories, along with their impact on recidivism, while exploring the concepts of rehabilitation vs incarceration.
Dr. McLeod is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently serves in the United States Air Force. She is also an instructor at the University of Kentucky, teaching Understanding Poverty, Inequality, and Injustice in the College of Social Work. As a clinician Dr. McLeod has over 13 years of experience working in the mental health profession where she initially started her career as a young social worker in child welfare. Her work also includes working in areas of family violence and substance abuse, with most of her clinical depth being trauma, depression, anxiety and culturally appropriated care.
As a trainer and facilitator, she has spent the last 10 years of her career in positions of leadership where she has impacted efficient delivery of quality patient care and disruption of team progression. She has excelled working in collaborative, cross functional environments as a thought leader. Eager to help other others, Dr. McLeod dedicates her time speaking life into audiences nationwide. Whether online or on stage, she uses wit and charisma to bring light to dark spaces and encourages others not to shrink at the sight of adversity but to rise to the challenge. In her spare time Dr. McLeod enjoys traveling, blogging, writing and tweeting.
