Class I – 10:15 – 1:15

HIV: A Virus, a Syndrome, and an Ethical Question

Since the early 1980’s clinicians have been grappling with the medical, social and ethical ramifications of the HIV/Aids Epidemic. On the medical front, great progress has been achieved. With proper medication people with HIV are living longer than ever, to the point where some no longer consider it a fatal illness.

Yet in our region and many large cities, HIV cases remain above epidemic rates and many questions still remain. This informative training will offer an understanding of current thinking around the HIV/AIDS epidemic and what it means for clients today and into the future. This training will look at what treatment is available for HIV, and the best ways to prevent new infections. We will take a fresh look at some of the ethical dilemmas that clinicians have been grappling with for more than a generation. This 3 CEU class counts as both Ethics and HIV training. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)

Class II – 2pm – 5pm

The Penn State Factor: The Ethical Imperative of Mandated Reporting and the Devastating Effect of Cover-Up (3 Category I Ethics CEUs)

Few things are as heartbreaking and upsetting as learning of an occurrence of child abuse. It is even more disconcerting to learn of systematic abuse and the efforts by institutions to cover them up. It is often said that “the cover up is worse than the crime”. Yet time and again institutions and professionals choose to turn a blind eye to abuse or sweep concerns under the rug.

This class will take a look at the abuse allegations and cover-up at Penn State University. Participants will look at reporting patterns and gain an understanding of what prevents people from reporting, and learn how to create an environment that encourages abuse reporting. Participants will learn the laws related to child abuse reporting and what constitutes child abuse in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. They will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons that people and institutions do not report events and an understanding of that impact on the institutions and children. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)
