When the larger political landscape makes its way into family relationships and friendships, familiar kitchen tables can become places where conflict and anxiety can fester. Holiday celebrations can turn contentious and divisive, causing us to question the intentions of others in a way that challenges even the most harmonious of relationships. And if a discussion of politics becomes involved when meeting new people, a polarizing political landscape can lead to distrust, and may hinder our abilities to establish open and honest rapport. What’s a social worker or counselor to do?
We invite you to join master bridge-builder Dara Barlin, MA, as we delve into the skills that help us disarm the mental reflexes that cause greater division, defensiveness, and fear when talking about politics. Using innovative brain science techniques, Dara shares her research-based system to overcome political polarization and support bridge building across individuals and groups from opposing political parties and perspectives. Democrats and Republicans welcome.
Please note: This webinar may be taken alone, or as a companion course with Dara’s other corresponding presentation, “Let this Be a Lesson To You”. Please consult the full schedule to enjoy both classes!
Dara Barlin has spent 20+ years as a researcher, policy advisor, and global organizer seeking to improve outcomes for underserved communities. Recently she discovered a technique that radically accelerates the rate at which positive change can take place – it’s called 360 empathy. Over the past five years, Dara has fine-tuned her knowledge of 360 empathy and applied it to multiple contexts, helping nonprofits and government agencies transform their culture, create more kindness, and improve outcomes. Dara’s written a book about large-scale reform in education, and her research has been featured in a number of venues including the United Nations, U.S. Senate, Harvard Education Letter, The Guardian, London Times, and several other outlets. Her research supported Barack Obama in getting elected during his first presidential election campaign. In 2012, Dara led a global project across 97 countries to build trust and develop a common blueprint for positive change. Dara has a Masters with honors in Public Policy from the London School of Economics, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Barnard College.
