9:45 Registration and Refreshments

10:00am- 1:00pm Class 1 – From Adolescence to Independence: Preparing Adolescents for Independent Living

To become successful adults, youth must have a positive self-esteem, feel connected to a positive community of support, have a sense of purpose in the world, and believe that they have the power to control their destiny. The ability to make decisions and take a positive life direction promotes action and productivity later in life. Yet, the child welfare system often errs in the direction of taking charge when youth are making decisions.

The 1999, the Chafee Foster Care Independence Program (CFCIP) was created to ensure that young people involved in the foster care system have access to additional education, training, housing assistance, counseling and other services so that they may become successful adults. Through interactive discussions, real case scenarios and group activities participants will gain an understanding of the Chafee Act and develop the skills necessary to foster independent living skills in adolescents and young adults. (Trainer Tara Rice, LGSW, Director the TARA Center)

1:45- 4:45 Class 2 – Four Simple Questions that will Change your Client’s Life! Methods and Applications of Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy*

Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) principles have been applied to situations as diverse as, school settings, couples therapy, drug abuse, and suicide prevention programs. Unlike classical psychotherapists, SFBT practitioners don’t go looking at a client’s past to search for the root of the problem. Instead they ask a series of questions. They help their clients find out what is going right and build on those successes. The simple yet profound methods of SFBT have been shown to be affective in working with even highly dysfunctional clients and families.

This interactive training will familiarize you with the principles of SFBT and help you understand the implications of this highly effective therapy in working with their clients. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)

*This class was previously titled “Getting to the Point: Methods and Applications of Solution Focused Brief Therapy”
