All social workers know the feeling of answering the phone and hearing a client in crisis on the other end of the line. The client’s severe distress or escalated tone can unnerve even experienced clinicians. With an understanding of some fundamental principles, we can be prepared to effectively manage any crisis.

This interactive training will help participants understand the common factors that are present in all crises. Social workers will learn how to assess crises, react effectively and draw on the client’s strengths to de-escalate situations. Participants will examine some of the common mistakes that occur in crisis intervention and will learn to recognize barriers to effective crisis intervention.

Class 2 1:00pm-5:00pm (4 CEUs)

“QPR: Ask a Question Save a Life”

Every day, 84 Americans die by suicide. More Americans die by suicide than by homicide. Many people believe that when a person has decided to kill themselves, there is nothing you can do to stop them. In fact suicide is the most preventable form of death and almost any positive action can save a life. QPR is a three step process for preventing a suicide. It has been said that QPR is to Suicide as CPR is to a heart attack.

This interactive training will bust common myths about suicide and will enhance the participant’s skill. You will learn the three QPR suicide prevention steps, engage in realistic role play, and increase your comfort level in working with suicidal clients. Participants will learn to recognize signs of suicidality, including situational, behavioral and verbal clues. You will walk away with a better understanding of the nature of suicide and how to work with clients in a suicidal crisis.

Upon completing this class you will receive QPR Gatekeeper Certification in addition to your CEUs!
