Join clinical social worker, patient advocate and author, Iris Waichler, MSW, LCSW, as we examine the ethical, emotional, and logistical complexity surrounding the caregiver relationship. We’ll discuss how to begin the caregiver conversation and important ethics-based concepts for practitioners to help address, such as maintaining client autonomy, differences between healthy and unhealthy caregiver relationships, and how best to support families through the ethical challenges commonly associated with role reversal while promoting self determination when individuals or family members assume caregiving responsibilities. The unique aspects of providing care and support for patients and families during the COVID-19 pandemic will also be discussed.

 

Iris Waichler, MSW, LCSW, has been a licensed clinical social worker and patient advocate for over 40 years. She has done workshops, individual, and group counseling with people experiencing catastrophic illnesses. Ms. Waichler is the award winning author of the book Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster: A Guide to Educate and Inspire which received 4 major book awards. Her latest book, How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents, received 8 major book awards. Iris has been a freelance writer for 20 years authoring hundreds of articles on health related topics. She has been featured in Parade, Redbook, and Next Avenue Magazines.
