9:30 Continental Breakfast and Registration

10:00am- 1:00pm Class 1 – Creative Expression: Art & Mental Health (3 Category I CEUs)

You don’t need to be a connoisseur of the fine arts to enjoy this entertaining, interactive, and art filled training. Art is often used to express feelings and emotions that can’t be easily verbalized. Come explore mental health issues presented through well-known works of art (and some lesser known) by artists who have understood, captured and shared feelings without words.

Through interactive discussions, participants will be exposed to mental health disorders expressed through works of art. Attention is paid to known DSM diagnoses and clinical episodes of artists, and the reflection of this in their art work (such as Van Gogh’s blue period). For the uninitiated, this training can serve as a great introduction to the field of art therapy. (Trainer, Justin Griepentrog, LGSW, Program Director, Compassionate Grace Counseling Center)

1:45- 4:45 Class 2 – Getting to the Point! Methods and Applications of Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy

Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) principles have been applied to situations as diverse as, school settings, couples therapy, drug abuse, and suicide prevention programs. Unlike classical psychotherapists, SFBT practitioners don’t go looking at a client’s past to search for the root of the problem. Instead they ask a series of questions. They help their clients find out what is going right and build on those successes. The simple yet profound methods of SFBT have been shown to be affective in working with even highly dysfunctional clients and families.

This interactive training will familiarize social workers with the principles of SFBT and help them understand the implications of this highly effective therapy in working with their clients.
