10:00am- 1:00pm Class 1

The Seasons of Healing

A Wellness and Personal Development Training

In eastern philosophy the health of our earth, our relationships and our bodies is all rooted in the movement and balance of life’s energy, or chi.  To understand the symptoms that cause us dis-ease, and the paths that will take us to more ease, we look to where we are in the cycle of the seasons, and the movement or stagnation of energy.

This training is designed for clinicians to attend to our own wellness and personal development.   We will round out our “western” education with some healing practices from eastern philosophy and will include time for personal reflection using healing arts rooted in the wisdom of the physical seasons.  Participants will learn the gifts, emotions and challenges embedded in each season, as well as techniques to help ourselves be present to situations we find ourselves in, and create possibilities to move toward wholeness and healing.

Class 2- 1:45pm-4:45pm

The Art of Healing Practice

A Wellness and Personal Development Training

In “Batman Begins” Bruce Wayne observes, “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”  If we are what we practice, what can we do about the hopes, dreams and longings that swirl around in our psyches, and somehow never get fully integrated into our actions? This training is designed for clinicians to attend to our own wellness and personal development.

Participants will learn how to become observers of our selves and our world, applying the observational rigor of the physical sciences to the science of behavior. In the realm of psycho-therapy, we observe behavior in order to move ourselves from reactivity to choice. When responding to the behavior of others, we often have incomplete insight into the meaning of an action. We have the choice of creating limiting stories about the other, or we can imagine scenarios that open our responses to healing possibilities.  Attendees will practice the art of creating stories and metaphors that open new possibilities.  The training will also offer guidelines on how to set up practices for ourselves that take our intentions and turn them into creative and healing actions.

*Evening Ethics*

Class 3 (Evening) 5:30 – 8:30 (3 Category I Ethics Credits)

The Penn State Factor: The Ethical Imperative of Mandated Reporting and the Devastating Effect of Cover-Up (3 Category I Ethics CEUs)

Few things are as heartbreaking and upsetting as learning of an occurrence of child abuse. It is even more disconcerting to learn of systematic abuse and the efforts by institutions to cover them up. It is often said that “the cover up is worse than the crime”. Yet time and again institutions and professionals choose to turn a blind eye to abuse or sweep concerns under the rug. This class will take a look at the recently uncovered abuse allegations and cover-up at Penn State University.

Participants will look at reporting patterns and gain an understanding of what prevents people from reporting, and learn how to create an environment that encourages abuse reporting. Participants will learn the laws related to child abuse reporting and what constitutes child abuse in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. They will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons that people and institutions do not report events and an understanding of that impact on the institutions and children. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)
